The IFAI has spent the last 70 years recognizing and honoring innovation, design excellence and technical skill. All of the entries that are submitted are judged by editors, educators, design professionals, architects, and educators who are experts in the field.

Retractableawnings.com® was recognized for a unique and challenging motorized residential pergola project in a windy part of Denver, CO. The homeowners wanted a solution that would offer UV protection, protect against sun, glare, heat and most importantly protect against heavy rain.

They also wanted a light-colored fabric that would allow filtered light during daylight hours and also allow them to see stars at night. One especially challenging aspect was that the product that was used is from Europe and to use it in North America it needed to be converted from 230V to 110V.

Some other projects that were part of this competition included series of very modern looking pergolas in Boise, Idaho that needed not only great function but had to be built to the strict seismic codes of that area. 

Another was a solution for a hotel in Puerto Rico that had been devastated by Hurricane Maria in 2017. Rather than simply replace umbrellas that were constantly being damaged by high wind and hurricanes, a retractable, slide-on-wires pergola was created that provided a fantastic aesthetic result but could be quickly and completely retracted in the event of inclement weather.

A third example was a retractable screen project that was built to enclose an existing pavilion at a beachside hotel in Bermuda. The owners wanted a product that would protect the occupants of the pavilion from rain, sun, wind, and mosquitos. Since the pavilion had great views of the ocean, the owners did not want a product that would block that view. The solution was a clear vinyl window retractable screen product that checked all the boxes for the owners. A challenge of this was that clear screens can tend to wrinkle and stick but the project was designed and a patented product used so that it could be adjusted to withstand the variable weather to eliminate the problem.

One final example was a robust retractable pergola system that would protect the owners of valuable outdoor property from the sometimes harsh elements of North Florida, yet could be completely retracted when this vacation home was not in use. A very unique feature that was added to the project was an iron-grey colored hood cover that did a great job of preventing rain, leaves, debris and bird droppings from entering the folds of the pergola fabric when it was retracted and not in use.

As you can see from all of these examples, to even be considered for this award companies must create projects using high-quality components and fabric with cutting-edge design.
